Yesterday's
Blitzermarathon
in many European countries has yielded some weird results.
The crew of a Police cruiser in Denmark had their Jimmies rustled when their patrol car was overtaken by a big BMW with a twin-axle trailer going no less than
213 kilometres per hour
on a stretch of road where the
speed limit was 80 kph
.
The driver eventually slowed down to a more modest 171 kph before being pulled over.
Asked for his driving permit, the driver admitted that he had already been banned from driving earlier. That said, they were in a hurry ... they really wanted to catch a ferry, which must be serious business.
The officers involved had trouble finding an appropriate fine, as legislation has not previously busied itself with ludicrous trailer hauling. According to some estimates, the fine should turn out equivalent to a pretty pedestrian 1,000 to 1,300 Euro in terms of money.
Now, If I were to decide about that guy's driving fate, though, he would be demoted to driving a unicycle.
Can anyone throw some science at whether or not you can safely drive 120+ mph with a trailer?

Probably yes, in controlled environment with purpose built trailer. This combination averaged 124.91 mph.

I sat in on a trial once where a guy drove a uhaul at about 75mph. Winds or something caught it and it jacknifed. Ended up killing him right there next to his kid who he was driving to college.
Uhaul claimed he was driving too fast. The family claimed the trailer hitch was poorly maintained. Either way, a very sad story.

I believe trailers with a single axle are a whole other beast, but there you go, nice pic.
Single axle('s) tend to throw their weight on the pulling car, which improves traction a bit. Notice the axle is a bit off CG, to really transfer some weight.
Well, somebody is trying that. Those are the trucks alone, nobody tried to haul anything behind them.

And that's Shockwave, that was bound to be mentioned. The trailer would get scorched...

That's what the X6M and the X6512309120310d is for! Towing your boat at speeds that most cars can't even achieve.

"But officer, I was just trying to pull my trailer straight."

So that's why the X5 is shaped like a brick! Always wondered about that.

YIKES!!! He's lucky his trailer tires didn't blow out. What are those things rated? Like P usually? which is 150 km/h.

Good grief. The fastest I've towed a twin axle trailer is 130km/h (With Audi S4 on it, which is likely heavier than this boat).
And even then, the truck can only do that going downhill. It's more normal for me to drive 100-110km/h. And that's with all wheels available to brake the combination.

Apex I linked your story on my fb, I hope that's ok!

The ST205/75D15 bias ply tires on my flatbed trailer don't even have an official speed code. However, you'd have to be insane to want to pull those loaded above 120km/h or so.

You got some beefy tires if I am reading the code correctly. But yeah insane. How hard would be to control a blowout at that speed? Damn!!!!!

In Finland we ran out penalty scale really quickly. We have minor offenses, dangerous driving (3 months of driving ban) and aggravated dangerous driving (6 month of driving ban). 50 km/h of too much speed is enough for the most severe. I think that you can drift easily into the most severe too.
The fines are tied to you income so they can be really harsh here. Some wealthy people have been getting €50,000 fines here.
But because our scale maxes out so quickly there's no difference in penalty if you are going 50 km/h too fast or 100 km/h too fast, towing an overweight trailer, driving on two wheels while your friends are changing your tires.
But DUI or causing an accident can make a difference.

Damn thats impressive and stupid, simultaneously and in equal parts!

Not hard. It’s a twin axle trailer (4 tires), so it should be reasonable to control. Just a bit uncomfortable for a few seconds...

For offenses that really defy common sense and endanger people, there should be like a full-on ban from driving motorized vehicles on the public road.
Switzerland also has penalties tied to income, so people often manage to achieve fines more expensive than the cars operated. ;)

Very much my first thoughs.

weren’t

People do stupid things all the time. Once they have proven their tendency, though, they should no longer be allowed to do so, imho.
Sad story indeed, “poorly maintained” or not. The faster you go, the bigger the fallout.

Sure ... I was both impressed and upset at the same time, so I can see other people sharing that sentiment. ;)
